Dr. Cori discusses how to naturally increase GLP-1 for weight loss

Everyone wants fast weight loss. In our society, the quest for rapid weight loss has become yet another thing we are impatient about. It’s not new news that people will turn to the latest fad diet or clinic serving up the newest drug therapy to have faster weight loss. It might take us years to gain the weight, but somehow the weightloss is supposed to be faster. I think we all know that’s not true. You didn’t put the weight on overnight, so you can’t lose it overnight. But now with the use of GLP-1 agonists for weight loss, it can feel like it’s overnight.

So let’s talk about the latest trend in weight loss. The relatively new kid on the block for weight loss solutions is the GLP-1 agonist, a drug I have been using to manage type 2 diabetes since the first one became available in 2005. Yep, that’s right, 2005. So this “wonder” in weight loss has been available for almost 20 years. Now when these drugs were first approved, it was for type 2 diabetes, so the weight loss indication is the new part, not so much the drug. And these drugs have their own set of safety issues that both patients and providers sometimes seem to minimize. From personal experience, I remember it was a struggle to get patients to consider this injectable therapy for their diabetes, but somehow when it comes to weight loss, no one is afraid of needles anymore.

Look, I’m not saying it’s all bad; I have used these medications many times for my patients with type 2 diabetes, but as a pharmacist with a focus on disease prevention and the use of natural products, I advocate for enhancing GLP-1 levels through lifestyle modifications rather than relying on synthetic drugs, especially in the absence of disease.

Understanding GLP-1 and Its Role

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone naturally produced in the intestines. It plays a vital role in regulating blood sugar levels and appetite. When we eat, GLP-1 is released, stimulating insulin secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting satiety. This just means that food takes a longer time to move through the intestines and as a result, you feel fuller longer and you tend to eat smaller meals due to lack of hunger. This natural process helps control food intake and maintain healthy glucose levels.

GLP-1 agonists, like the drugs you see marketed for weight loss today, mimic the action of this hormone, leading to weight loss by prolonging feelings of fullness and reducing hunger as I described above. However, these medications come with potential side effects and risks that warrant careful consideration. As healthcare professionals, we should be encouraging and supporting people to make lifestyle changes, and as such, I think it is our responsibility to explore safer, more sustainable alternatives whenever possible.

Is There Another Viable Solution? Can you Increase GLP-1 Naturally?

I know it’s tempting, but instead of turning to pharmaceutical drugs, you can actually enhance your own GLP-1 levels naturally. Lifestyle changes, particularly dietary modifications and exercise, can effectively boost GLP-1 production and support weight loss. Here are some strategies to consider:

  1. Dietary Choices: Consuming a diet rich in fiber, healthy fats, and lean proteins can stimulate GLP-1 release. Foods like oats, beans, nuts, and fatty fish are excellent choices. Including more fruits and vegetables in your diet also supports overall gut health, which is crucial for optimal GLP-1 production.
  2. Regular Exercise: Physical activity has also been shown to increase GLP-1 levels. Engaging in regular exercise, such as walking, jogging, or strength training, can enhance the body’s natural production of this hormone, promoting weight loss, and improving overall metabolic health.
  3. Adequate Sleep: Quality sleep is essential for hormonal balance, including GLP-1 regulation. Ensuring 7-9 hours of restful sleep per night can aid in weight management and overall well-being.
  4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is fundamental to maintaining metabolic functions, including the secretion of GLP-1. Drinking enough water throughout the day supports digestion and appetite control. Next time you think you’re hungry, drink some water first. You might actually just be dehydrated.

Bonus Tip:

Supplements: I know busy lifestyles don’t always allow us to eat enough fiber, get regular exercise, and allow for adequate sleep. This is where supplementation can help. I like to think of supplements as taking care of me when I don’t have time to take care of myself. Look for supplements that are minimally processed and use plant-based ingredients. One of the gut health supplements I recommend to my clients includes a prebiotic, which is known to stimulate the production of GLP-1 levels. So it supports clients in feeling full and allows them to eat the foods they enjoy in the right amounts.

Compared to Other Options: Natural vs. Pharmaceutical Approaches

When comparing natural methods to pharmaceutical interventions like GLP-1 agonists, several advantages of the natural approach stand out to me. First, lifestyle changes don’t carry the risk of side effects associated with medications. Common side effects of GLP-1 agonists include nausea, vomiting, belching, and general gastrointestinal discomfort, which can be severe, let’s be honest, and make it hard for people to adhere to therapy.

Additionally, natural methods promote overall health and well-being. Regular exercise and a balanced diet not only enhance GLP-1 production but also improve cardiovascular health, normalize blood sugar levels, boost immune function, and contribute to mental well-being. These holistic benefits are beyond the scope of what pharmaceutical solutions can offer.

Moreover, natural approaches are sustainable in the long term. While medications like GLP-1 agonists may provide short-term weight loss, they do not address the root causes of weight gain or promote lasting healthy habits. We can even see weight come back with a vengeance once therapy is stopped. By adopting lifestyle changes, individuals can achieve and maintain a healthy weight without the need for ongoing medication.

The Results Are In: Tangible Outcomes and Improved Health

Embracing natural methods to increase GLP-1 levels results in sustainable weight loss and improved overall health. Individuals who focus on dietary changes, regular physical activity, and other lifestyle modifications often experience a steady, healthy weight loss, which is easier to maintain long-term compared to rapid, medication-induced weight loss.

Furthermore, the benefits extend beyond weight management. Improved GLP-1 levels naturally enhance metabolic health, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and other obesity-related conditions. The holistic approach fosters a healthier lifestyle, leading to better energy levels, improved mood, and a greater sense of well-being.

Advocating for Natural Solutions in Weight Loss

While GLP-1 agonists have gained popularity as a weight loss solution, I firmly believe that natural methods to enhance GLP-1 levels should be prioritized. As a pharmacist committed to patient health and safety, I advocate for natural solutions for my clients. Often the weight gain is a result of many lifestyle factors like our relationships, our work, our finances, and other stressors that extend beyond the food we put in our mouths.

By focusing on natural, holistic approaches, I help women achieve their weight loss goals without exposing them to the risks and side effects associated with pharmaceutical interventions. Let us embrace the power of natural solutions to foster lasting health and well-being. If you are considering a weight loss strategy, I encourage you to discuss with your healthcare provider the benefits of increasing GLP-1 levels naturally and then reach out to me for help.
